Possible Causes
Spilled food in hidden areas, Mold growth in drain pan, Contaminated air tower or ductwork, Long-term power outage with spoiled food
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the refrigerator before removing panels or cleaning internal components. Use non-abrasive cleaners and adequate ventilation.
Step 1 – Deep clean interior:
- Remove all food and shelves.
- Clean all surfaces with a mixture of baking soda and warm water.
Step 2 – Clean drain pan and rear area:
- Remove the rear lower panel.
- Take out the drain pan if possible and clean with hot soapy water.
Step 3 – Clean air ducts and towers:
- Remove interior air tower covers and wipe inside surfaces.
Step 4 – Deodorize:
- Place open boxes of baking soda or activated charcoal in both compartments for several days.
When to call a technician: If odor persists and appears to come from insulation or sealed areas, professional assessment is needed; in severe cases, replacement may be more economical.
