Possible Causes
Control panel stuck in test mode, Power surge affecting display, Failed display board, Loose ribbon cable between display and main board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power before removing the control panel.
- Exit test mode: On some GE Profile models, pressing and holding specific button combinations (e.g., Energy Saver and Alarm for 5–10 seconds) exits test mode. Refer to the tech sheet behind the toe kick or rear panel for the exact combination.
- Power cycle: Unplug the refrigerator for 5 minutes, then restore power. If 88 persists, proceed to inspect the panel.
- Inspect ribbon cable: Remove the display/control panel and check the flat ribbon cable for damage or corrosion. Reseat both ends securely.
- Replace display board: If wiring is intact and 88 remains, the display/user interface board is likely faulty and should be replaced.
