Possible Causes
Condenser coils clogged with dust, Condenser fan motor not running, Weak or failed compressor, Refrigerant leak in sealed system
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the refrigerator before cleaning coils or accessing the rear compartment. Sealed system work (refrigerant) must be done by an EPA-certified technician.
- Check condenser fan: Remove the rear lower access panel. With power restored briefly, verify the condenser fan next to the compressor runs when the compressor is on. If not, replace the condenser fan motor.
- Clean condenser coils: With power off, use a coil brush and vacuum to remove dust and pet hair from the condenser coils under or behind the unit. Good airflow is critical.
- Verify door seals: Inspect gaskets for gaps or tears. Close a sheet of paper in the door; it should have resistance when pulled. Replace damaged gaskets.
- Allow recovery time: After heavy loading or door left open, it can take 24 hours to stabilize. Monitor temperatures with a thermometer.
- Call for service: If the compressor runs continuously, coils are clean, and temperatures remain high, a sealed system issue (low refrigerant, inefficient compressor) is likely and requires professional repair.
