Possible Causes
Failed defrost heater, Open defrost thermostat/bi-metal, Faulty evaporator thermistor, Main control board defrost circuit failure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the refrigerator before accessing internal components. Avoid using sharp tools to remove ice.
- Check for frost pattern: Remove the freezer rear interior panel. If the evaporator coil is completely encased in ice, the defrost system is likely not working.
- Manual defrost: With power disconnected, allow the unit to sit with doors open for several hours or use a hair dryer on low to melt ice. Protect plastic parts from excessive heat.
- Inspect defrost heater: Locate the defrost heater at the bottom or around the evaporator. Look for breaks or burn marks. A continuity test with a multimeter (with power off and wires disconnected) can confirm if it is open and needs replacement.
- Check defrost thermostat/bi-metal: The thermostat clipped to the evaporator tubing should show continuity when cold. If it is open when frosty, replace it.
- Evaluate thermistor: The evaporator thermistor should be firmly attached to the coil. If it is loose, corroded, or reading out of range, replace it.
- Control board: If heater and thermostat test good but dE persists, the main control board may not be initiating defrost and should be diagnosed by a technician.
