Display shows E8 and the compressor may not start or may run only briefly before stopping.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Danger: Compressor and inverter circuits carry mains voltage and can store charge. Unplug the refrigerator and wait several minutes before touching components. If you are not experienced with electrical work, contact a technician.
- Check ventilation and condenser: Ensure the rear of the fridge has adequate clearance and the condenser coils are clean. Overheating can cause compressor protection to trip.
- Listen for compressor behavior: A repeated clicking sound every few minutes suggests a start relay or overload issue.
- Access compressor compartment: Remove the rear lower service panel to expose the compressor, start device, and (if fitted) inverter module.
- Inspect wiring and connectors: Look for burned or loose connectors on the compressor terminals and inverter/start relay.
- Test start relay/overload (non-inverter): Remove the PTC relay and overload protector from the compressor. Shake the relay gently; if it rattles excessively or shows burn marks, replace it with a Grundig-compatible start device.
- Check inverter status (inverter models): Some inverters have status LEDs. If the inverter board is visibly burned or emits a burnt smell, it likely needs replacement.
- Compressor test: Measure winding resistances between compressor terminals. Very high or zero readings may indicate internal failure, which requires compressor replacement by a refrigeration technician.
- Reassemble and test: After replacing the start device or inverter, restore power and monitor compressor operation and E8 status.
Because of the high voltage and refrigerant system involvement, most E8-related repairs beyond basic checks should be handled by a qualified service technician.
