Possible Causes

Failed evaporator NTC sensor, Sensor dislodged from evaporator coil, Broken or shorted sensor wiring, Defective main PCB sensor input

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety warning: Always disconnect power before removing the evaporator cover. The evaporator fins are sharp and can cause injury—wear gloves.

Troubleshooting steps:

  • 1. Defrost access: If the evaporator area is heavily iced, unplug the unit and allow it to defrost completely (24–48 hours with doors open). Place towels to absorb water.
  • 2. Remove freezer back panel: Take out drawers and shelves, then remove screws holding the evaporator cover. Gently pull the cover forward to expose the evaporator coil and sensor.
  • 3. Locate the sensor: The Haier evaporator sensor is usually clipped to the evaporator tubing or attached with a metal clip or plastic holder.
  • 4. Inspect and reseat: Ensure the sensor is firmly attached to the coil and that its wires are not cut, pinched, or corroded. Reseat the connector.
  • 5. Measure resistance: With the refrigerator unplugged, disconnect the sensor and measure resistance. Compare to the NTC chart at the approximate evaporator temperature (often below 0°C/32°F). Replace if readings are open, shorted, or far off spec.
  • 6. Wiring and PCB check: If the sensor is good, check continuity from the sensor connector to the main PCB. If wiring is intact and E3 persists, the main control board may be faulty.
  • 7. Reassemble carefully: After replacing the sensor, secure it firmly to the evaporator, route wires away from the fan, and reinstall the cover ensuring no air leaks or pinched wires.

Note: A bad evaporator sensor can also cause frost buildup or warm temperatures. Monitor operation for 24 hours after repair.
