Possible Causes
Failed defrost heater, Open defrost thermostat/thermal fuse, Faulty defrost sensor, Main PCB not initiating defrost
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the refrigerator before accessing the evaporator and heater. The heater is high voltage.
Steps:
- 1. Defrost manually: Unplug the unit and allow all ice to melt (24–48 hours with doors open). This will temporarily restore airflow.
- 2. Access evaporator: Remove freezer drawers and rear panel to expose the evaporator, heater, and defrost components.
- 3. Test heater and thermostat: Use a multimeter to check continuity of the defrost heater and thermostat. Replace any open components.
- 4. Test defrost sensor: Measure resistance of the defrost sensor and compare to spec. Replace if out of range.
- 5. Control board: If all components are good but frost returns quickly, the main control board may not be initiating defrost and should be replaced.
