Possible Causes
Stuck or broken air damper door, Ice buildup in air channels between freezer and refrigerator, Failed refrigerator compartment fan, Misplaced food blocking air vents
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the refrigerator before removing interior panels or working near fans.
Steps:
- 1. Check airflow: Place your hand in front of the refrigerator air vents (usually on the back wall). If little or no cold air is felt while the freezer is cold, airflow is restricted.
- 2. Inspect for blocked vents: Remove items that are pressed directly against the rear wall or vents. Avoid overpacking shelves.
- 3. Listen for fan: With the refrigerator door open and door switch held closed, listen for the evaporator/refrigerator fan. If silent, test and replace the fan motor as needed.
- 4. Check for ice blockage: If you suspect ice in the air channels (common after door left open), unplug the unit and defrost completely for 24–48 hours with doors open. Place towels to catch water.
- 5. Inspect damper: On models with a motorized damper, access the damper assembly (often at the top rear of the fresh food compartment). Check if the door is stuck closed or broken. Replace the damper assembly if it does not move or is physically damaged.
Tip: After repair, allow 24 hours for temperatures to stabilize.
