F8 appears and the refrigerator may not cool properly, with fans not running or running erratically.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Disconnect power before accessing internal fan assemblies. Fan blades can start unexpectedly when powered.
How to proceed:
- 1. Listen for fan operation: With doors closed for several minutes, you should normally hear a gentle fan noise. If silent, suspect the evaporator fan.
- 2. Access evaporator fan: Remove freezer drawers and the rear interior panel to expose the evaporator and fan housing.
- 3. Check for ice buildup: If the fan is encased in ice, fully defrost the unit. Ice can stall the fan and trigger F8. Ensure the defrost system is working (see defrost-related faults).
- 4. Spin the fan by hand: With power off, gently rotate the fan blades. If stiff or seized, replace the fan motor assembly.
- 5. Electrical test: Disconnect the fan connector and measure resistance across the motor terminals. An open circuit indicates a failed motor. Also inspect the harness for damage.
- 6. Control board: If the fan motor tests good and receives no voltage when it should be running, the main control board may be at fault.
After replacement: Ensure the fan shroud and wiring are correctly reinstalled to avoid noise and vibration.
