Possible Causes

Failed refrigerator door switch, Failed freezer door switch, Misaligned door magnet/reed sensor (on some models), Broken door switch wiring harness

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the refrigerator before removing any switch assemblies.

Identify the affected door: Open each door and observe whether the interior light turns on and off properly. The door with incorrect light behavior is likely the problem.

  • Locate the door switch: On Insignia refrigerators, door switches are usually mounted in the cabinet frame near the top or side of the opening.
  • Inspect the switch: Check for physical damage, sticking plunger, or signs of moisture intrusion.
  • Test the switch: With the unit unplugged, remove the switch (usually pried out gently with a flat tool) and disconnect the wires. Use a multimeter to check continuity while pressing and releasing the switch. It should change from open to closed.
  • Replace if faulty: Install a new Insignia-compatible door switch, reconnect the wires, and snap it back into place. Ensure the door fully depresses the switch when closed.
  • Check wiring: If the switch tests good, inspect the wiring harness leading from the switch into the cabinet for breaks or loose connections at the control board.
  • Restore power and test: Plug the refrigerator back in and verify that lights and fans respond correctly and that the E6 code clears.

Warning: Do not bypass door switches permanently; this can cause safety issues and improper operation.
