Possible Causes
Open or shorted freezer thermistor, Damaged thermistor harness, Loose connector at control board, Faulty main control board sensor input
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power before accessing the freezer rear panel. Use gloves to protect from sharp metal and cold surfaces.
- Locate the freezer thermistor: Typically clipped to the evaporator cover or wall inside the freezer. Inspect for ice damage, broken wires, or a loose sensor.
- Check harness and connector: Ensure the thermistor connector is fully seated at both the sensor and the main control board.
- Test the thermistor: Remove the thermistor and measure resistance at room temperature. Compare to the expected value (commonly ~2.7–3.5 kΩ at 77°F). Replace if reading is open, shorted, or far out of range.
- Install replacement: Clip the new freezer thermistor in the same location and route wires away from moving parts and sharp edges.
- Control board diagnosis: If the E2 code persists with a new thermistor and good wiring, the main control board may be faulty and should be tested by a professional.
