Possible Causes
Failed compressor start relay, Open compressor overload protector, Faulty inverter board (on inverter compressors), Defective main control board output
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the refrigerator. The compressor area contains high voltage components; if you are not comfortable, contact a technician.
Steps:
- 1. Access compressor compartment: Remove the rear lower access panel on the back of the refrigerator to expose the compressor and start components.
- 2. Listen for clicking: When powered (briefly), repeated clicking from the compressor area suggests a bad start relay or overload. Unplug again before proceeding.
- 3. Inspect start relay and overload: Remove the plastic cover on the side of the compressor. Pull off the relay/overload assembly and inspect for burnt smell or rattling pieces inside the relay.
- 4. Test relay: Use a multimeter to check continuity across the relay terminals per service data. An open or shorted relay must be replaced.
- 5. Test compressor windings: With the relay removed and power disconnected, measure resistance between the compressor pins (C-R, C-S, R-S). Values should be low and not open; infinite resistance between any pin and ground indicates a grounded compressor (non-repairable).
- 6. Replace start device: If the compressor tests good but the relay/overload is faulty, install a new OEM start relay/overload or inverter module as specified for your Kenmore model.
- 7. If compressor or inverter is bad: Compressor or inverter board replacement requires specialized tools and should be done by a licensed refrigeration technician.
