Possible Causes

Open defrost heater, Failed defrost thermostat (bi-metal), Broken wiring in defrost circuit, Defective main control board defrost relay

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the refrigerator before accessing the evaporator or heater. Avoid contact with sharp evaporator fins.

  • Defrost manually: Remove freezer contents and interior rear panel. If the evaporator is encased in ice, use a hair dryer on low and towels to melt and absorb water. Do not chip ice with sharp tools.
  • Locate heater and thermostat: The defrost heater is usually a metal or glass tube at the bottom of the evaporator; the thermostat is clipped to the coil.
  • Test heater: Disconnect heater leads and measure resistance. An open circuit indicates a failed heater.
  • Test thermostat: When cold (below freezing), the thermostat should show continuity. If open when cold, replace it.
  • Inspect wiring: Check for burnt connectors or broken wires in the defrost circuit.
  • Control board: If heater and thermostat are good, the main PCB may not be initiating defrost and may need replacement.
