Possible Causes
Defective freezer thermistor, Broken or pinched thermistor wiring, Loose connector at main control board, Failed control board input channel
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power before removing freezer panels.
Steps:
- Locate the freezer thermistor: Typically mounted on the rear freezer wall or clipped to the evaporator cover in Magic Chef freezers. Look for a small plastic probe or a sensor clipped to tubing behind the rear interior panel.
- Access the sensor: Remove shelves and the rear interior panel (usually held by Phillips screws). Carefully pull the panel forward to expose the evaporator and sensor.
- Inspect wiring: Check the thermistor leads for ice damage, chafing, or disconnection. Ensure the connector is tight at the sensor and where it joins the main harness.
- Test resistance: With a multimeter, measure resistance at room temperature or at a known temperature (e.g., ice water ~32°F / 0°C). Compare to the expected NTC curve (commonly 20k–50k ohms at 32°F). Open or short readings indicate a bad sensor.
- Replace if needed: Install a compatible Magic Chef freezer thermistor, routing the wires away from sharp metal edges and moving fan blades. Reinstall the rear panel and shelves.
- Power up and monitor: Restore power and allow 12–24 hours for full temperature stabilization. The E2 code should clear once the control sees valid readings.
If E2 persists with a known-good sensor: The main control board may have a failed thermistor input and should be replaced by a qualified technician.
