Possible Causes
Stalled ice maker motor, Jammed ice maker mechanism, Faulty ice level sensor, Loose wiring to ice maker module
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the refrigerator and shut off the water supply before working on the ice maker.
Steps:
- Inspect the ice maker: Remove the ice bin. Check for large clumps of ice or cubes jammed in the ejector blades. Clear any obstructions by hand; do not use sharp tools.
- Check the shutoff arm or sensor: Ensure the mechanical shutoff arm (if present) moves freely and is not stuck in the OFF position. For optical sensors, clean the sensor windows with a soft cloth.
- Reset the ice maker: Many Magic Chef ice makers have a small test or reset button on the module. Press and hold according to the user manual to initiate a test cycle once power is restored.
- Inspect wiring: With power disconnected, verify the ice maker harness is fully seated in its connector and not damaged.
- Restore power and test: Turn water back on, plug in the refrigerator, and wait for a full cycle (up to 24 hours). The E5 code may clear after a successful cycle.
If E5 persists: The ice maker assembly or its motor/sensor module may be defective and require replacement.
