Possible Causes
Recent household power outage, Refrigerator door left open after power restoration, Warm food loaded immediately after power returns
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: This is not a hardware failure code. Do not attempt internal electrical repairs for a PO alert.
- Confirm power is stable: Make sure the refrigerator is plugged into a dedicated wall outlet (no extension cords) and that the circuit breaker is fully on.
- Acknowledge/clear the PO code: On most Maytag models, press and hold the Measure Fill or Alarm Reset or Filter Reset button (varies by model) for 3–5 seconds until the PO indicator clears. Check your user manual for the exact button.
- Check temperatures: Verify that the freezer is set near 0°F (-18°C) and the fresh food section near 37–38°F (3°C). Adjust if needed.
- Allow cool-down time: It can take 24 hours for temperatures to fully stabilize after a power outage. Avoid repeatedly opening the doors during this period.
- Inspect door seals: Ensure gaskets are sealing all the way around and that no containers are blocking the doors from closing fully.
If the PO alert returns repeatedly without actual power outages, have a qualified technician check the control board and power supply.
