Possible Causes

Failed refrigerator evaporator fan motor, Fan blade obstructed by ice, Loose or damaged fan wiring harness, Main PCB fan drive failure

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the refrigerator before removing interior panels.

Step 1 – Listen for fan operation:

  • With doors closed for several minutes, open the refrigerator door and listen for the evaporator fan behind the rear panel.
  • If you hear scraping or no fan noise, proceed to inspection.

Step 2 – Access the refrigerator evaporator fan:

  • Remove food and shelves from the fresh food compartment.
  • Remove screws securing the rear interior panel (evaporator cover) and gently pull it forward.
  • Disconnect any fan or light connectors.

Step 3 – Inspect the fan:

  • Check for heavy frost or ice around the fan; if present, defrost carefully with a hair dryer on low.
  • Spin the fan blade by hand; it should move freely without resistance.
  • Inspect the fan motor wiring harness and connector for damage or looseness.

Step 4 – Test/replace the fan motor:

  • With the unit unplugged, disconnect the Refrigerator Evaporator Fan Motor connector.
  • Check for continuity across the motor terminals with a multimeter.
  • If open or shorted, replace the fan motor assembly.

Note: If a new fan does not run and 21E persists, the Main PCB may be defective and should be checked by a professional.
