Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power before working inside the refrigerator compartment.
Step 1 – Check for frost on the refrigerator back wall:
- Look at the rear interior panel of the fresh food section.
- Heavy frost or ice indicates a defrost failure.
Step 2 – Access the refrigerator evaporator:
- Remove food, shelves, and drawers.
- Remove screws and gently pull off the rear interior panel.
- Locate the Refrigerator Defrost Heater and Defrost Sensor attached to the evaporator.
Step 3 – Test components (advanced):
- With the unit unplugged, disconnect the heater and sensor connectors.
- Check heater continuity with a multimeter; replace if open.
- Measure sensor resistance and compare to specifications; replace if out of range.
Step 4 – Temporary manual defrost:
- Unplug the refrigerator and leave doors open for 24 hours to melt all ice.
- Clean up water and reassemble; this may restore cooling temporarily.
Note: If heater and sensor are good, the Main PCB may not be initiating defrost and should be checked by a technician.
