Possible Causes
Failed PTC start relay, Open or weak start capacitor (if fitted), Overheated compressor overload protector, Loose connections at compressor terminals
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the refrigerator before accessing the compressor area.
Steps:
- 1. Access compressor terminals: Remove the rear lower cover. Locate the plastic start device housing on the side of the compressor.
- 2. Inspect start device: Remove the housing and check for burnt smell, rattling pieces, or discoloration of the PTC relay.
- 3. Test start components: Measure resistance of the PTC relay; a completely open or physically damaged relay should be replaced. If a start capacitor is present, test with a capacitance meter and replace if out of spec.
- 4. Check overload protector: Ensure the thermal overload is not permanently open. It should reset when cooled; if it remains open, replace it.
- 5. Reassemble and test: Install new start components as needed, reconnect to compressor pins, and test operation.
- 6. Compressor evaluation: If new start components do not resolve E17 and the compressor still fails to start, the compressor itself may be locked and require professional replacement.
Warning: Do not bypass overload protection; this can cause fire or compressor damage.
