Possible Causes

Open-circuit NTC sensor in freezer compartment, Shorted NTC sensor in freezer compartment, Damaged wiring between freezer sensor and main PCB, Faulty main control board sensor input

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Disconnect the refrigerator from power before removing panels or touching wiring.

E1 on many SMEG refrigerators indicates a freezer temperature sensor fault.

  • Step 1 – Visual inspection: Empty the top freezer shelf/drawer to access the rear inner panel. Look for heavy ice buildup around the rear wall which may be affecting the sensor.
  • Step 2 – Defrost if iced: If the rear panel is heavily frosted, switch off and leave doors open for 24 hours with towels to catch water. After defrosting, power back on and see if E1 clears.
  • Step 3 – Access the sensor: With power off, remove the rear inner panel (usually clipped or screwed). Locate the small probe clipped to the evaporator or mounted in a plastic holder. Inspect the sensor and wiring for damage or corrosion.
  • Step 4 – Check connections: Follow the sensor wires to the connector block. Unplug and replug the connector to ensure a solid contact. Look for any pinched or broken wires where they pass through the cabinet.
  • Step 5 – Test and replace: If you have a multimeter, measure resistance at room temperature; an open or shorted reading indicates failure. Replace with a SMEG-compatible freezer NTC sensor if faulty.
  • Step 6 – PCB consideration: If the sensor and wiring are confirmed good but E1 remains, the main PCB may be defective and should be checked by a qualified technician.
