Possible Causes
Failed magnetic reed switch or mechanical door switch, Misaligned door magnet, Broken wires in door harness, Faulty input on main PCB
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the refrigerator before removing any trim or switch housings.
E11 usually indicates a problem with the door open/closed detection circuit.
- Step 1 – Check door closure: Ensure the door is closing fully and that shelves or containers are not preventing a tight seal.
- Step 2 – Inspect door gasket: Look for twisted or damaged gaskets that might prevent the magnet from aligning with the sensor.
- Step 3 – Locate sensor: On many SMEG models, the door sensor is a small switch or magnetic reed sensor in the cabinet frame near the top or side. Remove the cover carefully.
- Step 4 – Test switch: Press a mechanical switch by hand or place a magnet near a reed sensor and listen for the interior light turning off. If nothing changes, the switch may be faulty.
- Step 5 – Replace sensor: Disconnect the old switch and install a new SMEG-compatible door switch or reed sensor, matching wire colours and connector orientation.
- Step 6 – Harness and PCB: If a new switch does not resolve E11, inspect the harness for breaks and consider main PCB input failure, which requires professional service.
