Possible Causes

Defrost sensor reading out of expected range, Defective defrost thermostat stuck open or closed, Poor contact between sensor and evaporator, Faulty main PCB interpretation of sensor data

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Disconnect power before accessing the evaporator and defrost components.

E14 suggests that the control board is receiving abnormal readings from the defrost sensor or thermostat.

  • Step 1 – Visual inspection: Remove freezer drawers and rear panel to expose the evaporator. Check that the defrost sensor and thermostat are firmly clipped to the coil.
  • Step 2 – Check for loose fit: A sensor not in good thermal contact with the coil can give incorrect readings. Reclip or reposition as needed.
  • Step 3 – Test components: With a multimeter, check continuity of the defrost thermostat (should be closed when cold) and resistance of the defrost sensor. Replace any component that is open when it should be closed or has out-of-range resistance.
  • Step 4 – Replace sensor/thermostat: Install SMEG-approved parts, routing wires away from sharp edges and moving fan blades.
  • Step 5 – Monitor operation: After reassembly and power-up, monitor for normal defrost cycles and ensure E14 does not return.
