Possible Causes

Failed evaporator NTC sensor, Corroded sensor connector at evaporator, Wiring harness damage in freezer section, Main control board sensor circuit fault

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the appliance before accessing the evaporator area. Sharp metal edges and ice can cause injury.

E2 commonly points to a defrost/evaporator sensor issue on SMEG no-frost models.

  • Step 1 – Check for frost buildup: Remove freezer drawers and inspect the rear panel. A thick sheet of ice over the panel suggests defrost system issues.
  • Step 2 – Manual defrost: Turn off and leave doors open for 24 hours to fully defrost the evaporator. Do not chip ice with sharp tools to avoid puncturing the evaporator.
  • Step 3 – Access evaporator: With power off and ice melted, remove the rear freezer panel. Locate the evaporator coil and the small sensor clipped to the coil or in a nearby bracket.
  • Step 4 – Inspect sensor and wiring: Check for cracked insulation, corrosion at the connector, or a sensor that has come loose from the coil. Reseat the connector firmly.
  • Step 5 – Test sensor (optional): Measure resistance with a multimeter; compare to expected NTC values. Replace the evaporator/defrost sensor if readings are out of range or if the sensor is physically damaged.
  • Step 6 – Reassemble and test: Refit the panel, restore power, and monitor for reappearance of E2. If the code returns with a new sensor, the main PCB may require replacement by a professional.
