Possible Causes

Faulty ambient NTC sensor near control panel, Loose or corroded connector at control board, Damaged wiring harness in door or cabinet, Main PCB sensor input failure

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Disconnect mains power before removing the control panel or display housing.

E3 on some SMEG refrigerators indicates an ambient (room) temperature sensor fault used for adaptive control.

  • Step 1 – Locate sensor: The ambient sensor is often located behind the top control/display panel or in a small grille on the front fascia. Remove the trim or panel carefully using a plastic pry tool.
  • Step 2 – Inspect connections: Identify the small NTC sensor and its two-wire connector. Check for loose fit, corrosion, or broken wires. Reseat the connector.
  • Step 3 – Check cable routing: Ensure the harness is not pinched where it passes into the cabinet or door. Repair any visible damage with proper splices or replace the harness if necessary.
  • Step 4 – Replace sensor if needed: If the sensor body is cracked or readings are out of range (if tested with a multimeter), replace it with a SMEG-compatible ambient NTC sensor.
  • Step 5 – Test operation: Reassemble the control panel, restore power, and verify that E3 clears and that temperature control responds normally.
  • Step 6 – PCB diagnosis: If the error persists with a new sensor and intact wiring, the main control board may be defective and should be evaluated by a technician.
