Display shows E5 and the refrigerator may stop cooling or cycle erratically.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the refrigerator. The compressor area contains live mains connections; only proceed if you are comfortable and competent with electrical work.
E5 on some SMEG models indicates a compressor drive or start circuit problem.
- Step 1 – Listen for compressor: After plugging in (briefly), listen at the back. Repeated clicking without the compressor running suggests a start device issue. Then unplug again.
- Step 2 – Access compressor compartment: Remove the lower rear service panel to expose the compressor and control box.
- Step 3 – Inspect start device: Remove the plastic cover on the compressor terminals. Check the PTC start relay and capacitor (if present) for burn marks, cracks, or melted plastic.
- Step 4 – Check connections: Ensure all spade connectors are tight on the compressor pins and that the earth wire is secure.
- Step 5 – Replace suspect parts: If the PTC relay rattles when shaken, is discoloured, or tests open with a meter, replace it with the correct SMEG compressor start device. Replace a bulged or leaking capacitor with the same µF rating and voltage.
- Step 6 – Test run: Refit covers, restore power, and monitor. If E5 persists and the compressor still fails to start, the compressor itself or the main PCB may be faulty. These require professional diagnosis and often sealed-system certification.
