How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off power and shut off the household water supply to the refrigerator before working on the ice system.

Step 1 – Check ice bin and level sensor

  • Remove the ice bin and ensure it is properly seated when reinstalled.
  • Clean any ice bridging or clumping that may block the ice level sensor or shutoff arm.
  • On models with an infrared ice level sensor, gently clean the emitter and receiver windows with a soft cloth.

Step 2 – Inspect the fill tube and ice maker

  • Look at the ice maker fill tube at the back of the ice maker. If it is frozen solid, thaw it with a hair dryer on low, keeping the heat moving to avoid melting plastic.
  • Check for mineral deposits or kinks in the water line feeding the ice maker.

Step 3 – Test water supply and inlet valve

  • Verify that the household shutoff valve is fully open and that water pressure is adequate (typically 20–100 psi).
  • With power restored, activate water dispense (if available) to confirm water flow.
  • If no water flows, the water inlet valve may be clogged or failed. Inspect the valve screen for debris and replace the valve if it does not energize or pass water when powered.

Step 4 – Reset or replace ice maker

  • Some Sub‑Zero ice makers have a reset button or can be cycled via service mode. Attempt a reset per the service manual.
  • If the ice maker does not cycle, does not fill, or shows obvious damage, replace the ice maker assembly.
