Possible Causes

Failed evaporator fan motor, Ice buildup around fan shroud, Faulty fan speed control on main board, Wiring harness issue to fan

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Disconnect power before removing any interior panels. Fan blades can start unexpectedly if power is applied.

Step 1 – Listen for evaporator fan operation

  • With doors closed for several minutes and the compressor running, you should hear a gentle fan noise from inside the compartment.
  • If the compressor is running but there is no airflow sound, the evaporator fan motor may not be operating.

Step 2 – Inspect for ice obstruction

  • Open the compartment and remove shelves to access the rear evaporator cover.
  • If the cover is bowed, frosted over, or has ice around the fan area, you may have a defrost or door gasket issue causing ice to block the fan.
  • Unplug the unit and allow ice to melt, or carefully use a hair dryer on low to speed thawing (do not overheat plastic).

Step 3 – Access and test the evaporator fan

  • Remove the evaporator cover to expose the fan motor.
  • Check that the fan blade spins freely by hand and is not rubbing on housing.
  • With power off, disconnect the fan and measure resistance across the motor leads. An open circuit indicates a failed motor.

Step 4 – Replace the evaporator fan motor if needed

  • Remove mounting screws and transfer the fan blade to the new motor if not pre‑assembled.
  • Install the new motor, reconnect wiring, and reassemble the evaporator cover and shelves.

Step 5 – Verify operation

  • Restore power and confirm that the fan runs when the compressor is on.
  • Monitor temperatures for 24 hours. If EC40 returns, the main control board or fan speed control circuit may be faulty.

When to call a professional: If the fan tests good but does not receive power, or if multiple fans are affected, contact a Sub‑Zero technician to diagnose the control board and wiring.
