Possible Causes
Failed ambient thermistor, Damaged sensor wiring near top grille, Loose connector at control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power before accessing the top grille or control compartment.
Steps:
- Locate ambient sensor: Often mounted near the top grille or air intake area, sometimes behind a small vented cover.
- Inspect sensor: Check for physical damage, paint, or debris covering the sensor.
- Test resistance: Disconnect the sensor and measure resistance with a multimeter. Compare to the expected value for room temperature (commonly ~10kΩ at 77°F / 25°C). Replace if open, shorted, or out of spec.
- Check harness: Ensure the wiring from the sensor to the main control is intact and connectors are fully seated.
Corrective action: Replace the ambient thermistor if defective. After replacement, restore power and allow several hours for temperature control to stabilize.
