Possible Causes

Open refrigerator thermistor, Shorted refrigerator thermistor, Damaged thermistor wiring harness, Failed main control board thermistor circuit

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety First: Disconnect power before accessing internal components.

Steps:

  • Locate the refrigerator thermistor: It is usually clipped to the liner wall or behind an air tower in the fresh food section, encased in a small plastic housing.
  • Inspect wiring: Check the thermistor leads and connector for damage, corrosion, or loose fit.
  • Test resistance: Disconnect the thermistor and measure resistance with a multimeter. At about 77°F (25°C), most Whirlpool NTC thermistors read ~2.7k–3.5k ohms (verify with your tech sheet). An open (OL) or 0 ohms indicates failure.
  • Replace if out of spec: Install a new Whirlpool refrigerator thermistor, routing wires as original and securing the sensor in the same location.
  • If the thermistor tests good, check continuity from the thermistor connector back to the main control board. Repair any broken wires or replace the harness.
  • If wiring and thermistor are good but E1 persists, the main control board thermistor circuit may be defective and require replacement.
