Possible Causes
Open freezer thermistor, Shorted freezer thermistor, Damaged harness to freezer thermistor, Failed main control board input
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Unplug the refrigerator before removing panels or shelves.
Steps:
- Access the freezer thermistor: Typically clipped to the evaporator cover or side wall in the freezer, inside a small plastic housing.
- Visual inspection: Look for ice buildup around the sensor, broken wires, or a loose connector.
- Defrost if needed: If the sensor is encased in ice, manually defrost the area with a hair dryer on low, keeping it moving to avoid melting plastic.
- Test the thermistor: Disconnect and measure resistance. Compare to the Whirlpool temperature/resistance chart in the tech sheet. Replace if open, shorted, or out of range.
- Check harness continuity: If the thermistor is good, test continuity from the thermistor connector to the main control board. Repair or replace the harness if open.
- If all wiring and the thermistor are good, replace the main control board.
