Possible Causes
Failed ice maker thermistor, Loose or damaged ice box sensor wiring, Ice maker module internal sensor failure, Main control board sensor input fault
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Disconnect power and shut off the water supply before servicing the ice maker.
Steps:
- Locate the ice box/ice maker thermistor: On many Whirlpool French-door models, it is attached to or near the ice maker housing in the fresh food compartment or ice box.
- Inspect connections: Verify the thermistor connector is fully seated in the ice maker or harness and that wires are not pinched or broken.
- Test thermistor resistance: Remove the thermistor connector and measure resistance at room temperature, comparing to the Whirlpool spec chart. Replace if open, shorted, or out of range.
- Check ice maker module: If the thermistor is integrated into the ice maker assembly, the entire ice maker must be replaced.
- If wiring and thermistor/module are good but E3 persists, suspect a main control board input fault and replace the board.
