Display shows E8 and the compressor does not start or cycles rapidly
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the refrigerator. Work at the rear only when the unit is disconnected. High voltage and hot components are present.
Checks:
- Access compressor area: Remove the rear lower cover to expose the compressor, start device, and control electronics.
- Listen and feel: When previously powered, did the compressor click repeatedly or hum then stop? This often indicates a start device issue.
- Inspect start relay/PTC: Remove the plastic cover on the compressor terminals. Check the start relay/PTC for burn marks or rattling pieces inside when shaken.
- Test compressor windings: With the start device removed and power off, measure resistance between compressor terminals (C-R, C-S, R-S). Values should be finite and not shorted to earth. If windings are open or shorted to ground, the compressor is faulty.
- Replace start device or inverter: If the compressor tests good but the start relay/PTC is suspect, replace it with the correct Zanussi part. For inverter models, a faulty inverter module may need replacement.
- Control board: If the compressor and start components are good but E8 remains, the main PCB may not be sending correct signals and should be diagnosed by a technician.
Warning: Compressor and inverter work involves mains voltage and potentially refrigerant system risks. Non-professionals should not attempt sealed system repairs.
