Possible Causes
Grass too high or wet causing excessive resistance, Worn or slipping drive wheels, Debris jammed in wheel housings, Overheated drive motors or failing motor bearings
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Press STOP and switch the mower OFF before touching the wheels or underside.
- Inspect lawn conditions: If the grass is very tall or wet, set the cutting height to the highest position and mow in stages. Avoid operation in muddy or waterlogged areas.
- Clean wheel housings: Turn the mower on its side (battery side up as per manual). Remove packed grass, mud, and debris from around the drive wheels and chassis.
- Check wheel tread: Examine the rubber tread on the Gardena wheels. If it is worn smooth, the wheels may slip and cause overload. Replace worn wheels.
- Allow cooling time: If the mower has been working hard, let it rest on the charging station for 30–60 minutes to cool the drive motors.
- Test on a flat area: Place the mower on a flat, dry section of lawn and start a manual mowing session to see if the error reoccurs.
Persistent Error 4 on normal grass height may indicate failing drive motors or a control board issue, which should be diagnosed by a service center.
