Possible Causes

Grass or roots wrapped around drive wheel axle, Stone or branch jammed in wheel housing, Worn drive motor gearbox, Excessive slope or obstacle causing stall

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Turn OFF the main power switch and remove the mower from the lawn. Wear gloves.

  • Inspect drive wheels: Check both left and right Makita drive wheels for twine, roots, or grass wrapped around the axles. Cut and remove all debris.
  • Check wheel housings: Look for stones, branches, or compacted soil wedged between the wheel and chassis. Remove obstructions.
  • Test wheel rotation: Manually rotate each wheel. They should turn smoothly with some gearbox resistance but no binding. If one wheel is locked or very rough, the drive motor/gearbox may be damaged.
  • Check lawn conditions: Avoid areas with deep ruts, large roots, or slopes steeper than Makita’s specified maximum. Level or block off problematic zones with boundary wire.
  • Reset: Power the mower back ON, clear the E2 error, and run a short test on flat ground.

If E2 persists and wheels are free, the affected drive motor or its wiring harness likely needs replacement by a qualified technician.
