Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn the robot upside down on a soft surface and press the CLEAN button to power it off before working on it. Remove the battery on older models if you will be cleaning extensively.
Steps to resolve:
- Relocate the robot: Pick up the robot, place it on a flat, hard surface away from edges, cords, and thick rugs. Press CLEAN to restart.
- Inspect the front caster wheel: Pull the front caster straight up to remove it. Clear hair, threads, and debris from the wheel and its socket. Ensure the wheel spins freely and the stem moves up and down smoothly. Reinstall firmly.
- Clean cliff sensors: Use a dry microfiber cloth or slightly damp cotton swab to wipe each cliff sensor window on the underside (usually 4–6 dark plastic windows at the front and sides). Do not use harsh chemicals or spray directly into the sensors.
- Check wheel drop movement: Gently press each side wheel up and down. They should move freely and spring back. If a wheel feels stuck, blow out dust with compressed air and gently work it up and down to free it.
- Test again: Place the robot on a flat floor and press CLEAN. If Error 1 persists on level flooring, the wheel drop or cliff sensor may be failing.
When to replace parts: If the robot still reports Error 1 on flat, clean flooring after cleaning, the wheel drop sensor assembly or cliff sensor board may need replacement. This typically requires opening the bottom cover; if you are not comfortable with disassembly, contact iRobot support or a technician.
