Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power to indoor and outdoor units at the breaker before working on wiring.
- Step 1 – Inspect Y1 wiring at thermostat: Remove the thermostat and verify the Y1 wire is secure and not frayed.
- Step 2 – Inspect Y1 wiring at furnace/air handler: At the Amana control board, confirm the Y1 conductor is connected to the Y or Y1 terminal and that the cable to the outdoor unit is intact.
- Step 3 – Inspect at outdoor unit: Open the control compartment of the Amana condenser/heat pump and verify the low-voltage wires from the indoor unit are securely connected to the contactor coil terminals.
- Step 4 – Check fuse: Inspect the low-voltage fuse on the Amana control board. Replace if blown and look for shorts in the Y1 wiring if it blows again.
- Step 5 – Bypass thermostat (advanced): With power on, briefly jumper R to Y at the Amana control board. If the outdoor unit starts, the thermostat or Y1 wire is at fault. If it does not, the issue is with the outdoor unit or control board.
When to call a professional: If the outdoor unit does not start with R-Y jumpered, contact an HVAC technician to diagnose the Amana condenser/heat pump.
