Thermostat displays E16 and backlight or screen brightness is abnormal

Safety first: Turn off power to the HVAC system at the breaker before removing the thermostat from the wall.

• Step 1 – Power reset: Turn off the furnace/air handler breaker for 2 minutes, then restore power. Check if the display returns to normal.
• Step 2 – Reseat thermostat: Remove the thermostat from the wall plate and reinstall it to ensure good contact with the sub-base pins.
• Step 3 – Inspect display (if accessible): If the thermostat design allows, gently check for any loose ribbon cable between the display and main board. Do not force or bend the cable sharply.
• Step 4 – Replace thermostat: If E16 persists and the display remains unreadable or dim, the backlight or driver circuit has failed. Replace the thermostat with a compatible Amana smart thermostat.
