Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: This is primarily a configuration issue; only open equipment panels with power off.
- Step 1 – Verify mode and setpoint: Ensure the thermostat is in COOL or AUTO mode and the setpoint is at least 3–5°F below the current room temperature.
- Step 2 – Check schedule and holds: Disable any energy-saving schedules or vacation modes that might limit cooling calls.
- Step 3 – Review installer settings: Enter the installer menu and confirm that cooling is enabled and the correct system type (Amana heat pump or conventional) is selected.
- Step 4 – Listen for click/relay: When lowering the setpoint, listen for a relay click at the thermostat or control board. If there is no response, the thermostat may not be sending a Y1 signal.
- Step 5 – Test with R-Y jumper (advanced): At the Amana control board, briefly jumper R to Y. If the outdoor unit starts, the thermostat or its wiring is at fault and may need replacement.
When to call a professional: If the outdoor unit does not start with R-Y jumpered, have an HVAC technician diagnose the Amana condenser/heat pump.
