Possible Causes
Loose R or C connection at wall plate, Undersized or failing 24V transformer, Shorted low-voltage wiring intermittently loading transformer, Internal regulator fault in thermostat
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off HVAC power at the breaker before touching wiring.
- Inspect wall plate connections: Remove the thermostat and tighten or reseat R and C wires. Ensure no copper is exposed beyond the terminal.
- Check for intermittent shorts: Look for thermostat cable runs where the jacket is damaged or pinched (behind the thermostat, at wall penetrations, near the furnace).
- Observe reboot pattern: If reboots occur when heating or cooling starts, the transformer may be overloaded. A technician should measure current draw and transformer capacity.
If wiring and transformer are good, the thermostat’s internal power circuitry may be failing; replace the thermostat.
