Possible Causes
Thermostat in wrong mode, Cooling disabled in installer settings, Loose Y1/Y2 wire, Failed Y output on thermostat
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power to indoor and outdoor units before handling wiring.
- Verify mode and setpoint: Ensure the thermostat is in Cool or Auto mode and the setpoint is below room temperature.
- Installer settings: Check that cooling stages are enabled and correctly configured in the installer menu.
- Inspect Y wiring: Confirm Y1 (and Y2 if used) is securely connected at the thermostat and at the furnace/air handler control board.
- Bypass test (for pros): At the furnace board, jumper R to Y to see if the outdoor unit starts. If it does, the thermostat or its wiring is likely at fault.
Resolution: Replace the thermostat if it fails to energize Y despite correct configuration and wiring.
