Possible Causes
Incorrect system mode or setpoint, Thermostat configured for wrong system type, Loose W1/W2 wire, Failed W output on thermostat
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power to the furnace/air handler before touching wiring.
- Verify settings: Ensure the thermostat is in Heat or Auto mode and the setpoint is above current room temperature.
- Check schedule/hold: Disable any energy-saving schedule or enable a manual hold to ensure the thermostat is actually commanding heat.
- Inspect W wiring: Remove the thermostat and confirm the W1 (and W2 if used) wire is firmly connected and not broken.
- Bypass test (for pros): At the furnace board, briefly jumper R to W to see if the furnace starts. If it does, the thermostat or its wiring is the likely issue.
Resolution: Replace the thermostat if it fails to energize W despite correct configuration and wiring.
