Possible Causes

Failed relay on Drayton receiver, Burnt relay contacts, Faulty relay driver transistor on PCB, Overload on switched live output

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: This involves mains voltage. Turn off power at the consumer unit and verify with a tester before opening the receiver.

  • Visual inspection: Remove the cover of the Drayton receiver (e.g. Wiser Heat Hub, Digistat RF receiver, SCR). Look for signs of overheating or burning around the relay area.
  • Check load wiring: Ensure the switched live output is not shorted to neutral or earth. Inspect wiring to the boiler or zone valve for damage.
  • Test relay operation: With power restored briefly and covers in place, command heat from the thermostat and listen for a relay click at the receiver. If no click and E5 is shown, the relay or driver is likely faulty.
  • Replace receiver: Drayton receiver PCBs and relays are not generally field-repairable. Replace the complete receiver unit, wiring it like-for-like according to the Drayton wiring diagram. Re-pair with the thermostat if required.
