Possible Causes
Incorrect wiring on ecobee terminals, Misconfigured equipment settings in ecobee installer menu, Unsupported multi-stage or heat pump configuration, Loose connection on furnace control board terminals
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power to the furnace/air handler at the breaker before adjusting wiring.
- Step 1 – Verify wiring at thermostat: Remove the ecobee from its backplate. Confirm each wire is inserted into the correct labeled terminal (R/Rc, C, W1/W2, Y1/Y2, G, O/B, AUX, etc.) according to your HVAC system type.
- Step 2 – Verify wiring at furnace/air handler: Open the access panel and match each thermostat wire to the correct terminal on the control board. Tighten any loose screws.
- Step 3 – Run equipment configuration: On the ecobee, go to Menu > Settings > Installation Settings > Equipment and run the guided setup. Select the correct system type (conventional, heat pump, number of stages, humidifier/dehumidifier, etc.).
- Step 4 – Remove unused wires: If extra unused wires are connected to terminals, remove and cap them so ecobee does not mis-detect equipment.
- Step 5 – Power cycle: Restore power and allow the ecobee to reboot. If E3 persists with correct wiring and configuration, the thermostat’s detection circuitry may be faulty and replacement is recommended.
