Possible Causes

Failed on-board humidity sensor in ecobee, Prolonged exposure to high humidity or condensation, Contamination from dust or cleaning sprays, Firmware bug affecting humidity readings

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: No high-voltage work is needed. Do not attempt to open the thermostat casing beyond removing it from the backplate.

  • Step 1 – Power cycle the thermostat: Remove the ecobee from its backplate for 30 seconds, then reinstall. Check if the E7 error clears after reboot.
  • Step 2 – Compare humidity readings: Use a separate hygrometer in the same room. If ecobee’s humidity reading is missing or wildly inaccurate while temperature is normal, the humidity sensor may be defective.
  • Step 3 – Check environment: Ensure the thermostat is not installed in a bathroom, above a humidifier, or where steam regularly contacts the device.
  • Step 4 – Update firmware: Connect to Wi‑Fi and allow the thermostat to update. Some humidity sensor issues can be corrected via firmware.
  • Step 5 – Replace thermostat: The internal humidity sensor is not serviceable. If E7 persists and humidity readings are invalid, replace the ecobee thermostat.
