Thermostat frequently displays 'Aux heat running' and energy bills are high

• Step 1 – Review runtime reports: In the ecobee app, check how often AUX heat runs compared to the heat pump.
• Step 2 – Adjust AUX lockout: In Thresholds, lower the outdoor temperature at which AUX is allowed to run, if your heat pump can handle lower temperatures.
• Step 3 – Increase compressor runtime: Increase the maximum runtime before AUX is allowed to engage.
• Step 4 – Improve building envelope: Seal drafts and add insulation to reduce heating load.
• Step 5 – Have the heat pump inspected: If AUX is needed even at mild outdoor temperatures, the heat pump may be underperforming or low on refrigerant.
