Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power to the furnace/air handler at the breaker before wiring.
Steps to troubleshoot:
- 1. Verify transformer power: Ensure the furnace/air handler has power and that the blower operates in test mode or via the old thermostat.
- 2. Identify wires correctly: Do not rely solely on wire colors. Trace each conductor from the furnace control board terminals (R, C, W, Y, G, O/B, etc.) to the thermostat location.
- 3. Connect C wire: Ensure a dedicated C conductor from the furnace board C terminal is connected to the thermostat C terminal, or install an Emerson power adapter kit if a C wire is not available.
- 4. Check R/Rc/Rh: For single-transformer systems, ensure the factory jumper between Rc and Rh (or R) is in place if required by your Emerson model.
- 5. Restore power and test: After wiring is corrected, restore power and confirm the thermostat boots up.
When to call a professional: If you cannot identify the control board terminals or the thermostat still does not power, contact an HVAC technician.
