Nest thermostat is hot to the touch
Advertisements
Possible Causes
Normal internal heating from display and Wi‑Fi, Installed on poorly insulated wall with warm cavity, Faulty internal regulator causing excess heat
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Note: It is normal for Nest thermostats to feel warm, especially when the display is on. Excessive heat, discoloration, or burning smell is not normal.
- Check for burning smell or discoloration: If present, immediately turn off power to the HVAC system and remove the Nest display.
- Improve wall insulation: Seal the wire hole behind the thermostat with foam or putty to reduce heat transfer from the wall cavity.
- Dim the display: Lower the display brightness and reduce the time it stays on in Settings > Display.
If the thermostat is uncomfortably hot or shows signs of damage, discontinue use and contact Google Nest support for replacement.
