Internal Relay Operation or Electrical Noise
Nest thermostat makes clicking or buzzing noises during operation
Advertisements
Possible Causes
Normal relay clicking when switching modes, Loose display on base causing vibration, Electrical interference from nearby devices, Failing internal component
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Note: Soft clicking when heating or cooling starts/stops can be normal. Loud or continuous buzzing is not.
- Reseat display: Remove and firmly reattach the Nest display to ensure a solid connection to the base.
- Isolate electrical noise: Move high-current devices (e.g., large chargers, dimmers) away from the thermostat wiring path if possible.
- Observe pattern: Note whether the noise occurs only when switching modes or continuously.
Continuous buzzing or crackling may indicate a failing internal component; in that case, replace the Nest display.
