Possible Causes
Open-circuit or shorted NTC temperature sensor, Damaged sensor traces on thermostat PCB, Moisture ingress into thermostat casing, Firmware misreading sensor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Do not open the thermostat casing unless you are qualified; this can void warranty. Most users should treat this as a replace-only fault.
- Power cycle thermostat: Remove the thermostat from the wall plate and take out the batteries for 1 minute, then reinstall. For wired models, power off at the fused spur for 1 minute and restore.
- Check location: Ensure the thermostat is not installed above a radiator, in direct sunlight, or near a draught, which can confuse readings (though this usually does not trigger a sensor error code).
- Update firmware: Use the Hive app to check for and apply any firmware updates that may correct sensor calibration issues.
- Inspect for moisture: If the thermostat is in a damp area (e.g. near a bathroom), consider relocating it. Allow it to dry out in a warm, dry room for several hours and test again.
- When to call a pro: Persistent sensor errors indicate a failed internal NTC sensor or PCB fault. The thermostat assembly typically needs replacement.
