Temperature Calibration or Sensor Drift
Thermostat temperature reading is inaccurate compared to other thermometers
Advertisements
Possible Causes
Thermostat installed near drafts or heat sources, Internal sensor drift, Blocked air vents on thermostat, Incorrect temperature offset setting
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: No high‑voltage work is required for this adjustment.
- Verify location: Ensure the thermostat is away from exterior doors, windows, direct sunlight, and electronics that emit heat.
- Clean vents: Use a soft brush or compressed air to clear dust from the thermostat’s air intake vents.
- Compare readings: Place a reliable digital thermometer near the thermostat and compare readings after 30 minutes.
- Adjust temperature offset: In the thermostat settings, use the temperature calibration or offset feature to correct minor differences (typically ±3°F).
- Replace thermostat if error is large: If the reading is off by more than the offset range, the internal sensor may be defective and the thermostat should be replaced.
